Frequently Asked Questions

What is Phage Therapy?

Phage therapy (PT) is also called bacteriophage therapy. It is a different approach to fighting bacteria. It uses viruses to treat bacterial infections. Bacterial viruses are called phages or bacteriophages. They only attack bacteria; phages are harmless to people, animals, and plants.

Bacteriophages are the natural enemies of bacteria. The word bacteriophage means “bacteria eater.” They’re found in soil, sewage, water, and other places bacteria live. These viruses help keep bacteria growth in check in nature.

Phage therapy might sound new, but it has been used for 100Trusted Source years. However, the treatment isn’t well known. More research is needed on bacteriophages. This therapy for disease-causing bacteria may be a useful alternative to antibiotics.

How phage therapy works

Bacteriophages kill bacteria by making them burst or lyse. This happens when the virus binds to the bacteria. A virus infects the bacteria by injecting its genes (DNA or RNA).

The phage virus copies itself (reproduces) inside the bacteria. This can make up to 1000Trusted Source new viruses in each bacterium. Finally, the virus breaks open the bacteria, releasing the new bacteriophages.

Bacteriophages can only multiply and grow inside a bacterium. Once all the bacteria are lysed (dead), they’ll stop multiplying. Like other viruses, phages can lay dormant (in hibernation) until more bacteria show up.

What are bacteriophages?

A bacteriophage is a type of virus that infects bacteria. In fact, the word "bacteriophage" literally means "bacteria eater," because bacteriophages destroy their host cells. All bacteriophages are composed of a nucleic acid molecule that is surrounded by a protein structure. A bacteriophage attaches itself to a susceptible bacterium and infects the host cell. Following infection, the bacteriophage hijacks the bacterium's cellular machinery to prevent it from producing bacterial components and instead forces the cell to produce viral components. Eventually, new bacteriophages assemble and burst out of the bacterium in a process called lysis. Bacteriophages occasionally remove a portion of their host cells' bacterial DNA during the infection process and then transfer this DNA into the genome of new host cells. This process is known as transduction.

How are Bacteriophages working?

Phages, also known as bacteriophages, are viruses that solely kill and selectively target bacteria. They are the most common biological entities in nature, and have been shown to effectively fight and destroy multi-drug resistant bacteria.

I have a certain infection. Which bacteriophage should I buy and how can I be sure if it works?

As this is a very sensitive subject, we do always recommend to make a distance analysis first, to see if and which bacteriophage goes to your bacterial infection. However if you are not willing to make analysis you can chose bacteriophages from our  ready selection. In the description you can find details about the effect but unfortunately this is not a guarantee that this specific Bacteriophage will work best for you. The advantage is that you can try them without any risk, as there are no side effects and there is no disadvantage in trying several different Bacteriophages to find the right one for your treatment.

How can the products be applied?

We have phages, supplied in different forms. Here is how they work:

Liquid phages in vials can be drunk or if there is a bacterial infection in lungs can be inhaled as well.

Bacteriophage in unguent (cream) works the best when the bacterial infection is outside on skin and it can easily applied on the infected area.

Suppositories are good once bacterial infection is located in vaginal or in the intestine area.

How often and how much I have to apply the Bacteriophages?

The quantity needed highly depends on your specific infection. Please check the detailed descriptions on the product pages for detailed application for our products and the recommended quantities (as a first indication).

How long are the Bacteriophages usable and how should I store them?

As soon as the packages arrives we recommend to keep the Bacteriophages in the fridge (optimal temperature is between 2-8 degrees celsius). Don't worry, our phages come in travelling friendly package.

The expiration date is written on the box. Once open please use them within 2 days.

Shipping

Where do you ship?

We offer worldwide shipping. Before ordering please check your local rules if a import is allowed in your country.

How does the packaging work?

We ship in insured packages with international transport companies such as UPS or DHL. We have a few years of packing and shipping Bacteriophages and our packages are well protected and travelling friendly. Don't worry they are made to travel a few days at room temperature or we use specialized cooling boxes.

Nevertheless we can unfortunately not always guarantee the correct treatment of the items by the different shipping companies. Should there be any issue with your delivery please let us know and we will send you a free replacement box.

How long does it take for my order to arrive?
